5. There’s Something about Mary
There’s a reason why this movie shows up on all the Funniest Movie lists. At the time it was released, the shocking, over the top zaniest of the Farrelly Brothers was new and unexpected.
Mary (Cameron Diaz), was the most popular girl in high school and the object of class geek Ted’s (Ben Stiller) adolescent dreams. Ted thought his dreams were about to come true when Mary asked him to the senior prom. They never made it to the prom: their night was cut short by an unfortunate zipper incident and Ted being rushed the emergency room.
Thirteen years later Ted still pines for Mary and his lost opportunity. He confides in his friend, Dom (Chris Elliott), who suggests Ted hire a private investigator to track her down. Ted hires Pat (Matt Dillon) who gets one look at Mary and decides to pursue her himself. He tells Ted that Mary is fat with kids by several fathers but Ted is undeterred and decides to seek her out. In the meantime, Pat is using every sleazy trick in the book to insinuate himself into Mary’s life.
Mary is bombarded with suitors desperate to win her affections, and soon the competition is less about Mary and more about winning. It’s a no holds barred look and love and lunacy. Yet there is a sweet and gooey center that makes this film a delicious treat.
