It was only a matter of time before Hollywood execs paired up the two beautiful, goofy, romantic comedy stars: Aston Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, into one movie. Between the two of them I think I counted 8 bazillion romantic comedies. The pairing and plot were no brainers and you don’t really need a brain to enjoy this movie. In fact, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you leave your intellect at home attending to more challenging tasks like balancing your checkbook or programming the TiVo.
Jack was fired by his father. Joy was dumped by her fiancée. Jack and Joy are having a rough week. Then fate intervenes and thrusts these two unlikely lovebirds into oncoming traffic…Jack and Joy are hit by a cab driver named Prasad. Actually, they are double booked in the same hotel suite and after a silly scene and lots of screaming things are straightened out. The hotel even comps them a limo for a night out on the town. Jack and Joy get drunk and get married.
The next morning, sober if throbbing heads prevail and they decide to get an annulment, and then Jack hits a jackpot on a slot machine with Joy’s quarter.
Jack and Joy fight. Jack and Joy fall in love.
It didn’t take a rocket surgeon to see that coming. The movie is saved by its charismatic stars. Cameron Diaz was convincing as Joy, an uptight stockbroker and Ashton Kutcher is an awesome slacker dude. Dennis Miller as Judge Whopper (get it?) and Queen Latifah as Dr. Twitchell provided a few laughs along the way as well.
Even if you can’t afford to jet off to Vegas and blow a ton of money gambling, you can give your brain a vacation. No thought required, just sit back and enjoy.
