1408

Movie night and Stephen King…two of my favorite things. I settled in with my bowl of popcorn, popped in the DVD and prepared myself to be scared poopless. Then something strange happened. I know what you’re thinking, “It’s Stephen King. OF COURSE something strange happened.” Unfortunately, this strange thing resembled boredom.

Based on a short story, 1408, is the story of a cynical writer, Mike Enslin (John Cusack) searching for spirits in hotels across the nation. He’s written a series of books about haunted hotels but nothing prepared him for the evil waiting behind door 1408. Despite dire warnings from the hotel’s manager (Samuel L Jackson) and dozens of deaths, Enslin insists on staying in the room overnight. It doesn’t take long for Enslin to get spooked. The room plays nasty tricks until he’s desperate to escape.

The atmosphere is chilling and unsettling, however the story drags midway through. An unexpected respite is ill conceived and zaps what little tension remains. The movie started out frightening but fizzled in the end. It does have a PG-13 rating, it’s too creepy for little ones, but it won’t ruin the popcorn with graphic images of gore or excess violence.
