Q&A with CrossFit Athlete Brooke Wells

CrossFit Games Athlete Brooke Wells takes an ice bath in an Ice Barrel 300

One of the biggest names in CrossFit, Brooke Wells is hoping to qualify for the CrossFit Games for the ninth time in 2024. On top of being an elite athlete, she's also sharing what she's learned throughout her career in a book launching in January 2024.

Tell us about your first ice bath! How did you get started with cold therapy?

I think my first time in a cold bath was way back when I was a track athlete. We tried things like that from time to time but it wasn’t until I was a few years into my CrossFit career that it became part of my routine.

What’s your cold therapy routine?

Well, it depends on the time of year and where we are in the competitive season but right now I’m doing 3 minutes in my Ice Barrel after dinner and before bed. It’s been tough because it’s so cold outside but I love it.

What are you thinking about while you’re in your ice bath?

I’m really just focused on my breathing. My brain empties out all other thoughts!

What’s something that helps you stay motivated?

I think motivation comes and goes, so I really try to focus on routine and my process, but of course I’m motivated to be back at the CrossFit Games!

Something that keeps you grounded?

My family. I spent Christmas at home with my family this year. I haven’t seen some of them in a couple years, and it was extremely comforting.

Part of your routine that you’ll never skip

My sleep!! I love my naps and always try to get 10-12 hours of sleep.

A goal you’re working toward

I’ve been working toward the launch of my book for the last 18 months, and that is happening this week!

That will be a major milestone!

Favorite products for self-care and/or recovery

My Ice Barrel, my Kineon Labs red light therapy Move+ and all the basics like foam rollers

Favorite place to get cold

On my patio during a quiet peaceful evening

How has cold therapy leveled up your training?

The way it reduces my soreness is noticeable. I’m in the gym 6-8 hours per day so to be able to show up fresh and recovered allows me to go harder day after day!
